Artificial Consciousness: Utopia or Real Possibility?

چکیده
24 Computer Artificial Consciousness: Utopia or Real Possibility? S ince the beginnings of computer technology, researchers have speculated about the possibility of building smart machines that could compete with human intelligence. Given the current pace of advances in artificial intelligence and neural computing, such an evolution seems to be a more concrete possibility. Many people now believe that artificial consciousness is possible and that, in the future, it will emerge in complex computing machines. However, a discussion of artificial consciousness gives rise to several philosophical issues:

Would a Digital Brain Have a Mind?
C ertain recent events caused me to doubt whether I know my own mind or not. Let me explain. Last week, the first of our academic year, all first-year students in our degree program underwent a supervised test in which they pull an old computer to pieces and put it back together again. We give this test to put a healthy disrespect for digital cir-cuitry—which is, at heart, only carefully pollut...

The mystery of consciousness has enthralled human beings from time immemorial. The formal study of consciousness had been restricted mainly to philosophers and logicians in the past. However, with the development of fields like Computers and Cognitive Science, people from different disciplines are studying this subject and shedding new light upon it. Research in Artificial Intelligence has give...
متن کاملPhilosophical foundations of artificial consciousness
OBJECTIVE Consciousness is often thought to be that aspect of mind that is least amenable to being understood or replicated by artificial intelligence (AI). The first-personal, subjective, what-it-is-like-to-be-something nature of consciousness is thought to be untouchable by the computations, algorithms, processing and functions of AI method. Since AI is the most promising avenue toward artifi...
متن کاملToward a Politics of Possibility: Charting Shifts in Utopian Imagination through the World Social Forum Process
In a workshop entitled "Utopia and politics" at the fifth World Social Forum (WSF) in Porto Alegre, Nobel Laureate José Saramago squared off with famed Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano. While Galeano celebrated the "utopian impulse", Saramago said: I consider the concept of utopia worse than useless....What has transformed the world is not utopia, but need....The only time and place where our w...
متن کاملFrail and Feeble Mind: Challenges to Emerging Global Consciousness
This paper addresses some of the issues surrounding the discussion of emerging global consciousness. Given the amount of confusion and uncertainty about shared meanings, there is a range of metaphors that attempts to embrace or capture the meanings of such a global system. There are a number of different dimensions to the discussion, and it would be useful to review the literature and give a br...
